Mahedi Unique to south East Asia.
|
|
Mahedi Or Mahendi is a plant. In our sub-continent leaves of the Mahedi are used to color hands and arms of the females. Marriage,family get-together,Eid and puja are the main occasions when Mahedi is used.Marriage can not be imagined with out Mahedi.Leaves are used to make a paste.Then this paste is used to draw various motifs in the hand and arm. After several hours the paste is removed leaving behind the colors in the skin. The color is deep orange but unique to Mehedi itself. The color lasts for several weeks.Occasionally males are subjected to paint their hands with Mahedi especially during their marriage.
Korean ambassador to Bangladesh recently painted his hand with Mahedi in one social gathering.We observed this in the TV.
In the past ladies used to collect leaves directly from the plants but now a days ready to use tubes are sold in the market.
